Clinical Experiences
* Clinical experiences /internships through OSI are open only to students in a PT or PTA program. * Non PT or PTA students may inquire about job shadowing / observation hours.
OSI strives to provide every student with a high level, advanced clinical experience that will prepare them for employment in a fast paced orthopedic clinical setting that focuses on outstanding clinical care and customer service. We want students to enter the physical therapy profession with a strong clinical background, ethical and effective decision-making skills, and highly professional behavior.
Objectives:
Clinical
Become entry-level with orthopedic evaluation and treatment
Manage a moderate caseload with consistent time-management involving 1 hour evaluations and 1/2 hour subsequent visits
Determine discharge criteria and accurately predict expected number of visits and functional outcomes with assistance from clinical instructor
Become a critical decision-maker
Become familiar with various treatment techniques and specialties
Personal/Professional
Have professional behavior with exceptional maturity
Become a mature decision-maker
Ethical
Develop legal, moral, and ethical decision-making skills while finding a balance between patient needs, regulatory requirements, and expectations of those who pay for services.
Student Expectations: We prefer to take students in their final internships. We are a fast-paced orthopedic clinic and have high expectations for students in regards to evaluation, treatment, and documentation. We expect professional behavior, appearance, and overall presentation. We prefer students who have a strong orthopedic/sports medicine background or interest.

About the Center Coordinator of Clinical Education:
Melanie Youngquist attended the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and graduated with her Master's of Science in Physical Therapy degree in 1998. She has been employed with OSI ever since and currently works out of our White Bear Lake-Racquet and Swim location. Her interests include aquatics, the pelvic girdle, and working with students. She has been CCCE for OSI since 2005 and recently became credentialed as a clinical instructor through the APTA.
